Patellar strap or knee sleeve: which one for pickleball?

They look like they do the same job. They don't. Here's how to choose, and when to wear neither.

A patellar strap next to a knee sleeve on a court line

Walk past any pickleball court and you'll see both: a slim band just under the kneecap, or a full sleeve over the whole knee. They're not interchangeable. Here's the short version.

What a patellar strap does

A strap is a narrow band with a pad that sits on the patellar tendon, just below the kneecap. It puts targeted pressure on one spot and leaves the rest of the knee free to bend. Players like it for stop-and-start sports because it's light and stays out of the way.

What a knee sleeve does

A sleeve is compression fabric around the whole joint. It feels warm and snug, and plenty of players like that all-round feeling. It's bulkier, and it doesn't target one spot.

Strap Sleeve
Coverage One spot, below the kneecap The whole knee
Feel Light, barely there Warm, compressive
Under shorts Discreet Visible
Heat on long sessions Low Higher

Neither one is a treatment. If your knee hurts, swells or gives way, see a physio or a doctor before you play again.

How to choose

  • Pick a strap if you want something light that stays out of the way during split-steps and lunges.
  • Pick a sleeve if you like all-round compression and warmth around the joint.
  • Some players wear both on cold days. That's fine too.

If you go for a strap

Placement is everything: two fingers below the kneecap, pad centred on the soft spot, snug but not tight. Read the 10-second placement guide.
